CRPS Q & A

What is complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS)?

CRPS is a chronic pain condition that usually only affects one limb (arm or leg) after an injury. It can also develop as a result of an otherwise successful surgery. It’s theorized that the pain develops due to an injury or malfunction in your peripheral or central nervous system.

What are CRPS symptoms?

CRPS symptoms differ from person to person. But this chronic pain condition can cause severe, debilitating pain that affects your quality of life.

Symptoms of CRPS may include:

  • Chronic or sometimes constant pain in the affected limb
  • Burning, tingling, or numbness in the arm, hand, leg, or foot
  • The sensation that someone is squeezing the affected limb
  • Hypersensitivity in the affected limb
  • Skin may appear shiny or thin
  • Change in hair growth
  • Affected limb can feel colder than other parts of the body
  • Joint stiffness
  • Poor muscle control
  • Swelling in the affected limb

You may also experience an increase in sensitivity in the area and feel severe pain when touched.

What can I expect during a CRPS evaluation?

Dr. Kowal is an experienced chiropractor who specializes in neuropathic pain conditions. You can expect a compassionate and thorough evaluation when you come in to see him looking for help with your pain.

During your exam, he reviews your symptoms and asks when they started. He also conducts a physical exam, being very careful around the areas where you feel most of your pain.

How does Dr. Kowal treat CRPS?

Dr. Kowal offers an innovative non-surgical treatment to help those suffering from CRPS symptoms. He uses the FDA-approved Stimpod NMS460, which uses Transcutaneous Pulsed Radio Frequency (TPRF) energy to treat chronic neuropathic pain. TPRF is thought to improve cellular activity in the affected nerves, which may help to restore more normal functioning.

The Stimpod NMS460 is proving to be a beneficial treatment for nerve-related problems like CRPS. Dr. Kowal is one of just a few offices in Manhattan that uses this innovative therapy to treat nerve damage.
