Low Back Pain Q & A

What is low back pain?

Low back pain is one of the most common pain complaints and it affects almost everyone at some point in their life.

What causes low back pain?

Lower back pain is often the result of an injury or trauma, such as a fall or lifting something too heavy. But lower back pain can also appear for no apparent reason. Chronic pain, or pain that appears without apparent cause, requires a special therapeutic approach. These painful situations that may seem frustrating and confusing to you can often be understood and remedied in a clear and straightforward way by someone who sees them and treats them on a daily basis. That is Dr. Kowal’s specialty!

What happens during a low back pain consultation?

Dr. Kowal begins with a comprehensive evaluation of the major area of your pain as well as any other areas that may be related to your condition. The goal of the exam is to find the root cause of your pain. During your consultation, Dr. Kowal will review your symptoms, including the types of pain you experience, when they started, and the activities that worsen or alleviate the pain. He then performs a physical exam, paying close attention to your alignment, movement, and mobility.

Will I be treated on the first visit?

Yes! Dr. Kowal will begin treating you on your first visit. Dr. Kowal’s techniques for clearing out lower back pain are aimed to help you feel better quickly. Most people find that they are feeling better after their first office visit.  Dr. Kowal specializes in gentle joint mobilization and myofascial release techniques.  He does not use the ‘cracking type’ maneuvers that you may have associated with chiropractic care.

Treatment may also include instructions to help you re-pattern your movements and ergonomic habits. Many musculoskeletal problems can be remedied with changes to posture and movement that support mobility, flexibility, and strength.

While X-rays and MRI’s aren’t usually required before beginning treatment, if needed, Dr. Kowal will make the appropriate orthopedic referral and help you to get a consult scheduled as quickly as possible.
